ABAKADA was founded in 2018 by Arvin Boyon and Calvin Calma, a pair of Kapampangan friends from Chicago, Illinois. The brand showcases Filipino-American culture through various graphics and symbols. But instead of sporting the common sun and stars design which are iconic symbols of the Filipino flag, they opted towards minimal graphics, pastel and lighter shaded colors, along with Baybayin (ancient writing script of the Philippines). Heavy on the culture of their people, many releases feature Filipino phrases such as “Para Sa Kultura,” which translates to “For the Culture,” and “Para sa Hustisya at Kapayapaan,” which means “For Justice and Peace.”
